Writer and Artist

TREES, MOSTLY because...

  1. Most contemporary art is crap.*
  2. Shock rarely leads to awe.
  3. The shallow epiphanies offered by forms such as installation art take us nowhere.
  4. The call for a return to some golden age of figurative art is equally ridiculous.
  5. The abandonment of the natural world in favour of artificiality and surface is to be regretted; we should not be in retreat from nature but moving closer in.

*In the case of Piero Manzoni, Chris Ofili, and others, literally so.

With thanks to Dubravka Kalinich and my wife, Rachel, who don’t necessarily agree with any of the above.
